I can relate! After a few 3:50s and even a 3:45 I tricked myself I into thinking I could just wing it (with only a 15 miler as my long run)at London last week and still get in under 4 hours. So wrong. I ran a big slow 4:23. During the last weeks of training and again at mile 18, I was reminded again of how and why I hate marathons for all the reasons you mentioned. Plus London is so crowded now its impossible to pace correctly. This was my 7th. And last. 5 and 10Ks from now on.You did much better than I did. Great write-up, too.
